The British Society for the History of Medicine Biennial Congress

To register for this event, please click here

We look forward to welcoming you to the 2021 BSHM Congress in Sheffield. The rich industrial heritage of the city will provide an ideal backdrop to explore the key theme of the ‘history of medicine in the workplace’. The other key themes of the Congress are topical and relevant in the history of medicine. Papers from members and guests on general topics in the history of medicine will be welcome.

The chosen venue - the Diamond Building in the University of Sheffield - has excellent modern facilities and is close to the city centre with many types of accommodation available to suit all budgets. Sheffield is centrally located and has excellent road and rail links. There are many places of interest to visit in the city and nearby. These include the ‘great houses’ such as Chatsworth and Wentworth Woodhouse. Eyam, the so-called Plague Village, is within easy reach as are the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the National Coal Mining Museum. Excellent opportunities for outdoor pursuits are available in the Peak National Park some of which lies within the city boundary.» more

Caesarean Sections and the Long-Term Consequences

To register for this event, please click here

The symposium organising committee, in partnership with the International Society of Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS), are very pleased to invite you to attend this unique multidisciplinary course designed to improve your understanding and ability to manage complex disease. We are very proud to announce our distinguished faculty of international clinical experts in Caesarean Section and Abnormally Invasive Placenta (AIP)/PAS at the new home of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London.

Caesarean Section is increasingly becoming the preferred mode of delivery for clinical indication as well as maternal preference. We aim to discuss complex caesarean section and explore different strategies to deal with difficult surgery which will reduce the risk for the patient.

We will also cover AIP both in diagnosis and prevalence. Its worrying association with high maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity was highlighted in the latest MBRRACE reports. To address this problem, The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists published a new green top guideline for the management of this condition. Additionally, FIGO published a consensus meeting document and consideration of AIP classification for the same purpose. In order to improve patients’ outcome, NHS England is strongly in favour of centralising AIP services in specialised centres. These centres of excellence are expected to reduce maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality and provide better service.

The symposium offers carefully planned sessions to cover all aspects of Cesarean Section and PAS/AIP including: screening, prevention, diagnosis and management. Using presentations, lectures, expert panel discussions and audience participation, delegates are given the unique opportunity to master their knowledge. In addition, it is a great chance to network and improve the communication among different centres, both on a national and international level.

Lastly we will discuss the training of future generations of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist to improve their skills and knowledge in managing difficult clinical cases.» more
